Ontologies as the Backbone of Knowledge Management Processes

Although ontologies technology has been used in a considerable amount of knowledge management projects, its application has been limited to the definition of a common organizational language. In this paper we present in detail the ontology processes that are related to its application in knowledge management contexts and propose a new way to incorporate ontologies in knowledge management systems to promote the availability of knowledge, the knowledge evolution, the automatic and semi-automatic knowledge extraction and the integration of heterogeneous sources. Each one of these characteristics are supported by the related processes of ontology engineering.
